GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has directed Deputy Commissioner Kamrup (M) and Wetland Authority to carry out an exhaustive survey to study the extent of coverage of Deepor Beel: a great Ramsar Site for conservation activities of environmental and biological significance.
Chairing a governing body meeting of Deepor Beel Conservation and Development Society at the conference room of Chief Minister’s Office in Janata Bhawan today, Sonowal directed the concerned authority to take steps restore the sanctity of Deepor Beel which is a freshwater lake and an erstwhile water channel of River Brahmaputra.
Sarbananda Sonowal also stated that Deppor Beel is known to have sustained several small and natural water channels which because of several reasons have stopped flowing. In view of this, Sonowal asked Water Resources Department and GMC and GMDA to work on reviving these natural channels for Deepor Beel to maintain its famous tag of being the natural habitat of hundreds of bird species including migratory birds. He asked these departments to undertake a study and submit report to the government within three months.
According to a press release, Deepor Beel is also known to be the largest gathering of aquatic birds during the winter season and reviving the natural channels will prove to be an impetus to the visit of migratory birds as well as sustenance of other aquatic animals. Moreover, since Deepor Beel is the natural habitat of hundreds of bird species including lesser adjutant stork, greater adjutant stork, Siberian crane and large number of water fowls the high tension 33 KB wire gone over the Deepor Beel is reported to have caused problems for the avian life and Sonowal asked Power and Forest Department to study the phenomena and come out with a remedial step.
Moreover, as it is stated that the garbage disposal site located at Bora Gaon is polluting the Ramsar Site, Sonowal stressed on setting up of treatment plant to convert the garbage into manures and asked GMC and GMDA to look into the matter and prepare a report and submit it within two months. As for the proposed Sewage Treatment Plant one of whichis proposed to be built at Pamohi, Sarbananda Sonowal asked Guwahati Development Department to prepare a DPR with the help of technical experts for the project to hit the ground fast.
Chief Minister Sonowal also called for a symbiotic effort among all stake holders including Tourism Department and Forest Department to transform Deepor Beel into an attractive tourist destination of the state.
