GUWAHATI, Jan 18: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday laid foundation stone of Science City at Tepesia in the outskirts of the city for popularising science and technology at the grassroots. The Science City would be built for a total expenditure of Rs. 184 crore covering an area of 250 bighas of land and roads, drainage system etc. have already been completed there by the Government. The main building of the Science City would cost an amount of Rs. 110 crore and it being built jointly by National Council of Science Museum under the Cultural Affairs department of the Central Government and Science and Technology Department of the State government. Both the Centre and the State governments would share the total cost of the construction of the science city in 90:10 ratio.

Speaking at the foundation stone laying programme, the Chief Minister said that 21st century is the age of science and technology and therefore, the young generation of the State must acquire knowledge in this field to become human resource of highest quality. The State government is endeavouring to make Guwahati the gateway to entire South East Asia and that is why infrastructure is being developed in and around the city at a rapid pace, he added.

Speaking the programme, Minister of Science and Technology Keshab Mahanta termed the foundation stone laying occasion of the science city as historic and said that the previous governments did not provide the kind of budget to Science and Technology Department which is now being provided. He also informed that steps have been taken to set up district science centres in every district which would be of equal standards to Regional Science Centre in Guwahati.
