CM Sarbananda Sonowal To Campaign For Party Candidates From October 14

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Altogether 6,78,898 voters will decide the political fates of 20 candidates for the four Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) in the October 21 by-elections in Assam. While the by-elections will be held on October 21, counting of votes will be conducted on October 24.

There are nine candidates for Jania LAC; five for Rangapara LAC; four for Ratabari LAC; and two for Sonari LAC. There are 1,88,214 voters in Jania LAC; 1,64,830 in Ratabari LAC; 1,70,587 in Sonari LAC; and 1,55,267 voters in Rangapara LAC.

Of the total 830 polling stations set up for the by-polls, the maximum number of 229 polling stations are for Jania LAC in Barpeta district; 202 each for Ratabari (SC) LAC in Karimganj district and Sonari LAC in Charaideo district; and 197 for the Rangapara LAC in Sonitpur district. According to political analysts, straight fights are likely in all the four LACs. Except in Jania LAC where the fray is expected to be between the Congress and the AIUDF; the by-poll tussle is likely to be between the BJP and the Congress in the remaining three LACs of Ratabari, Sonari, and Rangapara.

Meanwhile, sources informed that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will campaign for the party candidates. He will campaign at Ratabari on October 14; Jania on October 15; Rangapara on October 17; and at Sonari on October 18. Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has already started campaigning for the party candidates. It has also been learnt that the AGP and the BPF will support the BJP candidates in these by-polls.

The by-elections have been necessitated as the sitting MLAs after winning the Lok Sabha polls in April this year vacated their seats in these constituencies. Jania MLA Abdul Khaleque (Congress) came out winner from the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency; Ratabari MLA Kripanath Mallah (BJP) won the Karimganj LS seat; Sonari MLA Topon Kumar Gogoi (BJP) won the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat; while Rangapara MLA Pallab Lochan Das (BJP) won the Tezpur LS seat.
