GUWAHATI: Symphony of the Savannah: Exploring Wild Africa – a coffee table book written and published by senior journalist Sivasish Thakur – was released in the presence of a host of dignitaries at an event held at the Bhasatattwabid Dr Banikanta Kakati auditorium, Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra on Sunday.

The book is based on the experience of a lengthy African safari of the writer who, during the course of an African safari covering several game reserves including Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha and Crescent Island, gave a firsthand account of his journey. The famed African wilderness aside, the writer also focused on presenting the insight that he had acquired through interaction with the local tribes, particularly the Maasais who are known the world over for their harmonious existence with nature and, of course, their bravery and unique lifestyle that has endured the challenges of modernity to a large extent.

Notably, the writer has been an environmental journalist for the past 23 years, covering extensively many wildlife and environmental issues of Assam and the Northeast. Dr Purnima Devi Barman, while describing the book as a riveting account of an African safari, said that the volume captured truthfully the best of wild Africa, bringing out vividly its abundance and diversity of wildlife together with the peoples and their lifestyles. Senior journalist Trideep Lahkar, who accompanied the writer during the safari, also shared their experience in his speech.
