GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has directed the IGP (Inspector General of Prisons) to complete, at the earliest, the vaccination process of all inmates in the jails across Assam — including those who have received only the first dose.

This direction was given by the double Bench of the Court comprising Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak on July 28, 2021.

Additional Senior Government Advocate, Assam, R.K. Borah apprised the Bench that of the 11,164 inmates in various jails across the State (which also includes the 'UTs' or 'Under Trials'), as many as 10,263 jail inmates have been given at least one shot of the anti-COVID vaccine. On the other hand, 218 jail inmates have been fully vaccinated.

The Court was also informed that "around 900 inmates still need to be vaccinated. The process of vaccination is still going on and most of the prisoners, who could not be vaccinated, were earlier suffering from Coronavirus; and, they will be vaccinated only after a period of three months".
