GUWAHATI, Sept 9: The sky-rocketing of prices with accelerating momentum in respect of all items, particularly essential commodities like food as well as fuel like LPG and petrol and diesel, has hard hit the common man almost to the point of reducing them to a crippled lot. While the Government seems to be doing absolutely nothing to stem the rot, it is just natural for rival political parties to take advantage of the scenario to with a view to gaining political gains.

As a mark of protest to the galloping price hike, the Indian National Congress has called for a Bharat bandh on Monday. With a view to making the bandh a success, the Assam unit of the Congress on Sunday initiated an awareness rally with the object of making the people conscious about the disastrous fallout of such unchecked price rise and the need of calling for the bandh.

The rally, symbolic in nature on price rise focused on mainly three factors - the anti-people policy of the BJP Government, price rise of all commodities including essential commodities and skyrocketing of prices of fuel. The rally was taken out from Pan Bazar to Fancy bazaar in the city on Sunday.

Further, in the evening, the Youth Congress workers took out a torch rally with the same purpose of making the people aware on price rise in the Dispur area of Guwahati.

While a large number of Congress leaders and workers took part in both the rallies, AICC general secretary and in-charge of Assam Harish Rawat, APCC president Ripun Bora and several other senior leaders also took part in the rallies.

Explaining the purpose of the bandh, the rallies sought the support of the business community and the common people towards the bandh. The rallyists raised slogans of Government failure on all fronts.

Talking to media persons, Rawat said that the BJP under Modi came to power by promising ‘acche din’ to the nation. But ‘acche dion’ never arrived and on the contrary things have been turning from bad to worse under BJP rule, he said. He added that the saffron brigade has failed on all fronts and in the latest instance the general people are being forced to bear the brunt of non-stop price hike especially in the matter of essential commodities like food and fuel. He said that since the government has failed to check price hike, the Congress has called for Bharat bandh on Monday.

On the other hand, Ripyun Bora said that the Sonowal Government raised the slogan of ‘parivartan’, adding that as of now the ‘parivartan’ can be seen in the sky rocketing of prices of all commodities, including food and fuel. He added that the non-stop price hike has reduced the common people of Assam to a crippled lot.
