GUWAHATI: The Congress has set up a special committee which will explore Constitutional and legal ways to grant ST (Scheduled Tribe) status to six communities — Moran, Mattock, Sonowal, Tai Ahom, Sootea, Koch-Rajbongshi, and the tea tribes. It will also take necessary steps to grant land rights to the tea tribes.

The committee will be chaired by senior leader Debabrata Saikia and the following members will assist him – Dr Durlav Chamua, Barnali Saikia Bora, Kartik Kurmi, Boajem Handique, Birinchi Neog, Pranab Baruah, and Shailendra Sonowal.

The Congress also made it clear that the ST status will be granted without hampering the rights of the existing STs.
