GUWAHATI: A protest by 6th Semester students of the Gauhati University (GU) on Tuesday took a violent with the police resorting to a lathi-charge. Several students, including girls and the PG students' union president, Hemen Kalita, sustained injuries.

The protest was staged to demand for re-checking of the recently-declared results of the 5th semester examinations, which were allegedly anomalous.

Meanwhile, the GU authority has issued a statement that the protest was carried out without any prior information and it was found upon enquiry that while some of the protesting students have arrear in some papers, the majority of them have failed in the examination. The statement said that as per procedure, the students could approach the Controller of Examinations through the respective Principals to address such issues. "The gathering of students is, therefore, unwanted which has also disrupted the normal functioning of the university," the statement said.

The statement added that all grievances of the students will be resolved within one week.
