Corona positive inmates' attempt to flee foiled at Sonapur COVID Care Centre

GUWAHATI: COVID-19 positive inmates of Guwahati Central Jail now staying at the COVID Care Centre at Sonapur making an attempt to escape created a sensation in the area on Friday night when the security personnel on duty had to fire in the air.

The COVID Care Centre has 175 jail inmates, and according to sources, majority of them came out of the centre to flee. Already two of the inmates fled the COVID Care Centre on Thursday night.

On the incident Guwahati Police Commissioner MP Gupta said, "The inmates now lodged in the COVID Care Centre at Sonapur did create a situation there on Friday night, and made an attempt to flee. They also attempted to attack sweepers and police personnel on duty. However, the police personnel on duty reacted immediately. A case has been registered in this connection. Investigation is on.

"One of the two inmates who've already fled is related to a kidnapping case in Jalukbari police station and the other has a theft case at Hatigaon police station."
