Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 16: Over the last one decade or so, the graph pertaining to cases of cheating in different police stations across the State has been registering an alarming upward trend. This has been gathered from available Assam Police data.

While in 2007 as many as 739 cases of cheating were recorded in various police stations in Assam, the number shot up to 886 in 2008, 1098 in 2009, 1326 in 2010, 1453 in 2011, and 1693 in 2012. While a fall in the number appeared to be a distant cry, the year 2013 witnessed a spiral rise in the number of cheating cases in the State with a whopping 2607 such cases registered in different police stations in Assam. With the number continuing to rise with every passing year, 2916 cases were registered in 2014, 3781 in 2015, 4195 in 2016 and 5449 in 2017. In 2018, till April 1658 cheating cases have been registered in Assam. While there appears to be no declining trend, the trend over the last one decades only indicates that it could further worsen. One reason for this sorry state of affairs could an overall degeneration and decline of moral values among the people in general.
