COVID-19 in Guwahati: 53 Maligaon residents test positive through Rapid Antigen testing method

Assam had recently procured 2 lakh rapid antigen testing kits, out of which 1 lakh have been allotted for Guwahati city

Guwahati: At least 53 people have tested COVID-19 positive through the Rapid Antigen Tests in Guwahati, Assam, today.

Out of the 183 samples that were tested, 53 people tested positive in the city's Maligaon area, already considered a hotspot of coronavirus in the city. Rapid antigen tests detect the presence of a foreign substance in a person's oral or nasal swab that triggers the production of antibodies, and, therefore, can find infections. But these are non-confirmatory tests. This means that those who test positive through rapid antigen detection tests are considered "truly positive" for COVID-19, but those who test negative must go for an RT-PCR test.

It may be mentioned here that Guwahati has been witnessing a surge in positive cases. On Friday, 365 new cases were reported across Assam, out of which 134 were detected in the city alone. Assam Health & Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on his Friday tweet stated that the State had 3,455 active cases and 14 deaths had been recorded.

Meanwhile, Guwahati is under complete lockdown with the strictest measures imposed. While the restrictions will be in effect till July 12, the authorities today issued a window for availing the essential items and services.
