STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Most of the business establishments in the city were shut down on Monday in response to the Vyapar Bandh, appealed by Assam Chamber of Commerce; however, a different picture was witnessed in Fancy Bazar Market Complex, Bamunimaidan market and in several other market places.

Despite the Government’s continuous appeal to avoid mass gathering in view of COVID-19 outbreak, people thronged at market places to fill their stocks of essential goods. Many of consumers said that they have come to purchase the essential goods and to keep it in stock so as to deal with any kind of uncertain situation during the lockdown period.

Talking to The Sentinel, Nekib Imam Saikia, assistant secretary of Sadou Guwahati Byobosayee Santha (SGBS) said, “The administration should be tightened. There is still no concern among the people and most of the people are taking the issue of COVID-19 very lightly. Places are still crowded. Shutdown for one day is just not enough to deal with this problem. We condemn this type of mass gathering. The government needs to make the people aware and they should also cooperate. SGBS welcomes the government’s decision of Lockdown. It’s necessary to handle any kind of uncertain situation.”
