COVID-19: Police personnel keeps vigil at 11 wards under lockdown

GUWAHATI: In view of the alarming situation due to rising COVID-19 positive cases in Guwahati, the administration declared total lockdown in 11 wards of Kamrup (Metro).

After total lockdown got enforced in the 11 wards from 9 pm onwards on June 23, the administration seemed to act in a strict manner against the lockdown norms violators. Though the areas under total lockdown were almost deserted but a few people seemed to come out to the streets. The police personnel on duty checked details of all the people who were loitering. Only people related to emergency services were allowed to enter in the lockdown areas. The rest were sent back by police personnel and were asked to take another route.

A traffic police personnel in Panbazar said that the administration has set up barricade in the bylanes of the areas that are under lockdown. He said, "As the administration has announced lockdown in Panbazar and Fancy Bazar, we are not allowing entry of any outsiders into the area. We will be taking strict actions against the people who violate the lockdown norms." The Fancy Bazar area has turned into a hotspot for corona infection. The place which is usually crowded at most of the time in the day seemed deserted after the enforcement total lockdown. A police personnel on duty at Fancy Bazar said, "We are allowing entry to only those people who are engaged in emergency services. For the rest of the people movement is not allowed. Those having valid reasons are being allowed to enter and it seems the public too are now frightened."
