COVID: Assam Police registered 12 cases & arrested seven for posting controversial content

GUWAHATI: The Assam Police has registered 12 cases and have arrested 7 people for posting controversial content regarding COVID-19 on social media.

Addressing a press meet here, on Monday, Chief Minister’s Media Advisor Hrishikesh Goswami said that over 100 people have been counseled so far.

Goswami stated that people should analyze and think thoroughly before posting any news about COVID-19 on social media. “On March 31, according to the Supreme Court’s order, a five-member State committee has been set up under the chairmanship of the director of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations. Representatives of Health and Family Welfare, Assam Police and Assam State Disaster Management Authority have been appointed as members of the State committee. The committee is observing various fake posts and rumours that are circulating on social media. Recently, an FIR has been lodged against a Bangla daily for publishing fake news”, he added.

Further, he asserted that the Assam Government is taking necessary steps to tackle COVID-19. “Till date, around 40 awareness programmes have been conducted in various villages and towns to make the people aware about COVID-19. We are running around 33 television ads and 34 print ads”, said Goswami.
