CPI (ML) Assam State Committee Demands a Solution to Floods in State

GUWAHATI: The CPI (ML) Assam State Committee has decried the discrimination meted out to Assam by the Central government. The party has demanded a permanent solution to floods and erosion in the State.

Addressing the press at Guwahati Press Club the party’s state secretary Rubul Sarma said: “Assam is currently going through a very crucial situation because of a flood. Along with floods, erosion is also damaging for the people here. However, the government hasn’t taken any tangible scheme for solving the problem”.

Sarma also said that as per the information was given by the Disaster Management Department, during last five years more than 11 lakh bighas of arable land have been lost and 86,561 people have been rendered landless in 23 districts. Sixty per cent embankments have not yet been repaired which has been damaged from the year 2015 to 2018, and 300 of the 432 ageing embankments are not in shape, he said.

The party raised the demand for the declaration of Assam /flood as a national problem. Apart from disaster response funds released so far, the Centre should release Rs 10,000 crore for solving the problems. Their other demands include rehabilitation of flood-affected people.
