Crimes against women in Guwahati cuts a sorry figure!

GUWAHATI: Normal life was badly affected by the corona-induced lockdown in 2020. However, the year ended with as many as 633 crimes against women in Guwahati under the jurisdiction of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate. It has cut a sorry figure.

The number of crimes against women in the metropolitan city was 861 when there was neither any corona outbreak, nor lockdown in 2019.

The types of crimes against women in 2020 are murders (10), rapes (39), dowry deaths (2), molestations (218), under Immoral Traffic (P) Act (3) and others 361.

The East Police District topped the list with 288 cases. The police stations that come under this district are Dispur, Hatigaon, Bhangagarh, Basistha, Khetri and Sonapur.

It was followed by Central Police District with 191 cases. This district comprises Chandmari Police Station, Noonmati, Geeta Nagar, Pragjyotishpur, Satgaon, Panbazar, Paltan Bazar, Latasil and the All-Women Police Station at Panbazar. West Police District had 154 cases in all in 2020. The police stations that come under this district are Bharalumukh, Jalukbari, Gorchuk, Fatasil Ambari and Azara.
