
GUWAHATI: On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, Consumers' Legal Protection Forum (CLPF) organized a Cyclothon with the demand to strengthen tobacco control laws to save lives, in collaboration with Consumer VOICE, New Delhi and in association with Cycling Association of Assam & Guwahati Cycling Community on Tuesday morning in Guwahati. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attended the event and encouraged the young cyclists who had come from across the State.
The Cyclothon was flagged off from in front of the Veterinary College field, Khanapara. Abhinash Joshi, Principal Secretary Health, Debraj Upadhaya, IGP (CID), Dr AC Kataki, Director, B Borooah Cancer Institute, Phuleswar Basumatary, Deputy Commissioner of Taxes, Dr Munindra Narayan Baruah, Director North East Cancer Institute & Research Centre, flagged off the Cyclothon at 6.30 am where more than 300 youth cyclists participated.
In their speech, the dignitaries referred to the recent global youth tobacco survey and said that nearly one-fifth of students aged 13-15 years are using tobacco products in India. They also appealed to observe everyday as 'No Tobacco Day'. They spoke about how tobacco causes cancer. The Cyclothon started from Khanapara and cyclists went up to Ulubari and again came back to Khanapara. The youth cyclists demanded to strengthen tobacco control laws to save lives and to implement vendor licensing in Assam.
