Debabrata Saikia requests BJP to reconsider stand on NRC

GUWAHATI: Leader of Opposition of the Assam Legislative Assembly (ALA), Debabrata Saikia has once again criticized the ruling BJP Government on the issue of NRC.

Saikia stated in a release that the stand of the Congress party has always been that the NRC should be updated as per the Assam Accord of 1985. He slammed the BJP for stating that there will be an all-India NRC and Assam should also accept the all-India NRC, wherein the cut-off date may be 1951 or 1971 or anything.

“I condemn this stand of the BJP because on March 17, 2010, during the discussions in the Assam Legislative Assembly, prior to passing of a resolution on updating the NRC in Assam, the then leader of the Opposition in the ALA from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Chandra Mohan Patowary had stated that AGP desired that it should be done as per the Assam Accord, the NRC of 1951 and the voters list of 1971. Similarly, the representative of the BJP, Mission Rajan Das had also stated on that occasion that the NRC should be updated while honouring the provisions of the Assam Accord. Therefore, their shift in stand now is unfathomable to us,” said Saikia. The Leader of Opposition concluded by requesting that the AGP and BJP to reconsider their present stand and abide by the Resolution adopted previously.
