Formation of zila parishads

GUWAHATI: The policy-making committee of the BJP is to decide if the party will seek support from its coalition partner AGP for the formation of zila parishad formation in the State or not.

During the run-up to the recently held panchayat poll in the State, the two coalition partners have earned enough rivalry between them.

Of the total 420 ZP constituencies in the State, the BJP won 212 seats, followed by the Congress with 147 seats, the AIUDF with 26, the AGP with 19 and independent candidates won 16 seats. Of the 26 zila parishsds in the State, the BJP can form 13 on its own, the Congress can form four on its own, one each by the AIUDF and the AGP on their own. If the BJP and the AGP support each other, they can form a few more ZPs.

State BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass said on Saturday that any decision on the party seeking support from the AGP for the formation of zila parishads will be taken by the policy-making committee of the party.

AIUDF leader Aminul Islam, on the other hand, said that their party would extend support only to secular parties for the formation zila parishads.
