GUWAHATI: APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) president Ripun Bora came down heavily on the State government for, what he said, unilaterally taking the decision for fresh lockdown in Guwahati and weekend lockdowns in urban areas in other districts in the State. He has said the decision should have been scientific and democratic. He has appealed to the government to reconsider its decision on lockdown.

Talking to newsmen at Rajiv Bhawan here on Saturday, Bora said, "At a time when States like Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat etc have been laying stress on restrictions instead of lockdown, the Assam government has opted to total lockdown. The situation in Assam is not as bad as that of Maharasthra or Gujarat.

"The State government should have taken the decision after taking other parties, trade unions and the civil society into confidence. The decision should have been scientific and democratic. The lockdown has been imposed on the people, tormenting them.

"The minister concerned gave time for collection of essential commodities within three days before the lockdown. Only finically well-off people can collect essential commodities. How can daily-wage earners collect all such commodities at a time? The government is thinking for only one section of people. It should think for all sections. "Workers in the unorganized sector have not been compensated the loss they had to incur during the series of lockdowns in the recent past. What relief the government will provide to such section of people in this lockdown? Taking all these into account, we appeal to the government to reconsider its decision on lockdown."
