GUWAHATI: The State Government has invited the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX), Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS), All Assam Students Union (AASU) and the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) for talks on the education front on August 18 at Janata Bhawan.

The development came close on the heels of the four organizations opposing the decisions taken by the State Government on the education front recently.

Secondary Education Secretary Bharat Bhushan Dev Choudhury wrote letters to the four organizations for talks with Education Minister Ranoj Pegu at Janata Bhawan.

Under the aegis of the AASU, the four organizations met on August 1 and vehemently opposed various decisions, including the cabinet decisions, taken on the education front. The four organizations submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on August 5 and made him know 11 resolutions of their August 1 meeting.

The August 1 meeting termed the Cabinet's decisions on education as 'shortsighted, unscientific, unreasonable and unnecessary. The meeting said that the decisions taken by the State Cabinet were against the New Education Policy-2020. They said that the Cabinet decisions if implemented would spell disaster for the vernacular medium schools in the State.

The meeting took several decisions and demanded the government to keep open the option of provincialization of schools at all levels, cancel the decision to teach Mathematics and Science in English medium from class III t. XII, proper teaching of English in all vernacular medium schools, development of educational infrastructure in all vernacular schools, cancellation of the decision to convert the model schools to English medium under the CBSE, cancellation of the setting up of an English medium school in each LAC under the CBSE, etc. It also opposed the decision to start English medium teaching in vernacular schools simultaneously.
