Delimitation process: APCC won’t participate in discussions with ECI team

GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has mentioned that they won’t be taking part in the meetings with the representatives of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

President of the APCC, Bhupen Borah informed about this decision in Guwahati. He mentioned that APCC representatives had met with the head of ECI and submitted a memorandum along with a list of suggestions regarding the delimitation process being carried out in the state of Assam on January 4.

It also aimed to highlight how and why the Assam Cabinet had decided to withdraw the district status of four administrative units namely Biswanath, Hojai, Bojali and Tamulpur ahead of the process.

Bhupen Borah also added that the ECI had mentioned that a written reply will be given regarding their queries but when no reply was received, they posted a letter on February 8, 2023, followed by another one on March 22. A follow-up call mentioned that the team will be meeting the representatives when they visit Guwahati.

“We are not against the delimitation process, by the issues pointed out must be resolved ahead of the process. A total of 3 hours has been allotted to a total of 11 parties by the team. Congress being the main opposition party, the 15 minutes allotted to us is not enough to discuss the issues,” said Bhupen Borah.

He also added that when the idea of delimitation was initiated in 2008, all the political parties including BJP and AGP reached a consensus that delimitation can be done only after the publication of the correct NRC. This message was conveyed to the ECI and the delimitation process was postponed.
