GUWAHATI: The Deepor Suraksha Mancha has demanded that the dumping ground near Deepor Beel should be shifted.
Since 2021, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has been dumping solid waste of Guwahati near the railway track in Deepor Beel, a prominent wetland and Ramsar site. Henry David Teron and Pramod Kalita, the president and secretary respectively of Deepor Beel Suraksha Mancha, said that on May 26 when a team of the Mancha had inspected the dumping ground, the team found that no steps had been taken to segretate the waste. "The directions issued by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) are being violated," they said.
Pollution from the waste dump is affecting the residents who live in the areas adjacent to Deepor Beel, livestock and aquatic fauna. "The waste from the dumping ground is a health hazard. To protect the wetland from pollution and to protect the health and hygiene of the residents, we demand that the dumping ground must be shifted," they added.
The Deepor Beel Suraksha Mancha has demanded that steps must be taken to ensure that the Morabharalu, Bahini, and Basistha rivers stop dumping sewage and rain water into Deepor Beel and to demarcate the boundary of the Ramsar site.
