GUWAHATI: With the start of the construction of the flyover projects on the National Highway, the Rajiv Gandhi Path has become a very important road for daily commuting. But with the movement of heavy vehicles on this road, the road has deteriorated rapidly, causing problems for the citizens.
The Rajiv Gandhi Path connects Jyotikuchi to the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre and Inter State Bus Terminus. When the construction of the flyovers began at Lokhra Junction, a large number of daily commuters started using this road to bypass the traffic. However, it can be noted that the locations near the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre have multiple parking lots for trucks that transport goods to and from multiple locations. In addition to these vehicles, a large number of dumpers carrying construction materials also use this road, especially during the late hours. The plying of these vehicles has led to damage to the
road itself at many points, along with an increase in the amount of dust in the air in the area near the road. The local residents have complained that due to the uncontrolled movement of these vehicles, they are forced to keep their doors and windows closed for a major part of the day. Apart from the problem of air quality, the movement of these vehicles has also increased the number of traffic accidents. A wide variety of vehicles, ranging from bicycles, two-wheelers, four-wheelers, e-rickshaws, commercial vehicles, and trucks, ply on this comparatively narrow road at their own speeds, causing a large number of traffic incidents.
With the increase in the number of e-rickshaws, which tend to move at a slow pace with no regard for speed or lane discipline and come to a stop or slow down at their own will, the traffic problems are manifold. These vehicles often clog the entry point at the busy junction, triggering traffic problems. With the local residents and the daily commuters raising questions regarding the conditions of this key road, it remains to be seen if the authorities take any action towards the resolution of such problems.
