Dilip Saikia Calls For Developing Patharughat As National Memorial

GUWAHATI: Mangaldoi Constituency MP Dilip Saikia urged the Union Cultural Minister to develop Patharughat as a national memorial on the same echelon as the Jalianwalabagh memorial. The issue was raised in the ongoing Budget Session of the Parliament under Rule 377 by Saikia.

In his speech, Dilip Saikia said, “The massacre of Patharughat occurred in January 28, 1894. It is located in Darrang district, 70 kilometers away from Mangaldoi city. The incident occurred 118 years ago, when the British police open fired on the farmers of the area and killed 140 people. The incident is renowned as the Assam Jalianwalabagh incident. After the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, the Patharughat incident was the biggest massacre incident but it is not itched in national history. As such, through the Lok Sabha Speaker, I humbly request the Union Cultural Minister to develop Patharughat as a national memorial and the martyars be honoured in the national level.”
