Dispur mulls SDRF compensation for man-animal conflict victims

GUWAHATI: The State Government has decided in principle that victims of man-animal conflict, or their next of kin in case of death, will be provided compensation under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

The Revenue and Disaster Management department is preparing a proposal in this regard.

According to the draft proposal, in the case of death due to man-animal conflict, the next of kin will be given compensation of Rs 4 lakh. In case of injuries or damage to property caused by animals, the victims will get compensation from the SDRF.

The draft proposal also provides for grant of SDRF funds to the forest department for installation of electric fencing etc to minimize man-animal conflict.

Hitherto, the forest department used to pay compensation in case of death due to man-elephant conflict.
