22,000 people booked for not wearing helmets in 20 days

GUWAHATI: Ahead of the New Year celebration, Guwahati Commissioner of Police Harmeet Singh has appealed to the people to celebrate while maintaining all precautions so that there is no loss of life.

Addressing media persons, Singh said, "Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made it clear that people will not be allowed to drink and drive. To ensure that people do not indulge in rash driving or drunk driving is not the responsibility of the traffic police and the police, people must also be conscious and socially responsible. They must be careful while driving and not drink and drive."

Singh said that due to traffic violations, from August 2021 to November 2021, Rs 2.50 crore was collected as fine from violators in Guwahati. In December, a record fine of Rs 4 crore was collected while in the last 20 days, 10,000 people were booked by the Transport Department for not wearing helmets while the traffic police booked 12,000 people for not wearing helmets. For drunk driving, in the last one week total 600 people were booked in the city.

Chief Minister Sarma had stressed quick disposal of cases. Accordingly, after July, 21,000 cases were disposed off. Singh said that around 60 murders took place in the city this year while in the last 2-3 months, the murders which took place were committed by people within the social circle of the victims. Talking about the war on drugs, the Guwahati Commissioner of Police said that since May, total 156 cases have been registered and 368 people have been arrested. Police have seized 13 kg heroin, 256 kg ganja,2.60 lakh narcotic tablets and 60,000 cough syrup bottles. Police also recovered 37 motorcycles, 33 Light Motor Vehicles and eight Heavy Motor Vehicles. Police seized Rs 1 crore cash and recovered 200 stolen mobile phones.
