Double verification during Lok Sabha poll counting

VVPAT will generate the symbol and mark of candidate voted for

GUWAHATI: With the advent of the Lok Sabha elections, every possible step is taken to ensure a smooth and hassle free exercise of people’s franchise. The launch of a new machine known as EVM/VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trial), will ensure that no foul play is committed.

Addressing the media at a workshop on Saturday, DC Kamrup (M) Biswajeet Pegu informed that the VVPAT machine will generate the symbol and mark the cast of vote and the candidate in a thermacol paper, enabling the voters to verify their casted votes instantly. A challenge (49 MA) can be posed if the symbol does not match the voted party, but in case of foul play, a report will be filed by the presiding to the reporting officer, who will take appropriate actions against the offender. Moreover, during the vote counting exercise, the VVPAT will also be counted.

1195 polling stations in 4 constituencies, which hold 25 zones, are set up in Assam, which will be presided over by 109 sector officers. Active preparation is already in progress with the sector officers, supervising the sites and will be duly reported back to the election offices.

The DC informed that the total voters in Kamrup (M) this year is 10,70,132 with 5,36,070 male voters and 5,34,062 female voters. 1715 Persons With Disabilities (PWD) voters have been permitted with 147 voters more to be included soon while the rest are under supervision. The total man power required is 7 thousand, of which approximately 5260 people (polling including reserve) is obligatory. The strong room for this year will be Maniram Dewan Trade Centre.

An armed and an unarmed officer will supervise each polling booth and high risk centers will be provided with extra security. Special provisions like wheelchair allotment, pick-up facilities, Braille for the blind who have also been granted permission to be accompanied by a non-political personals, etc have been made for the PWD. Live video footage and CCTV cameras will be continuously monitored and the DC has urged the citizens to come forward and exercise their franchise.

Election officer, Jumlee Saikia Kakoti informed that various apps have been launched which can be downloaded from the Play Store which can be put to use in case any anomaly is detected. For example, the C Vigil app will enable people to record any abnormality, which can be uploaded and immediate investigation will be prosecuted. Other apps include EMS, ETPBS, Suvidha app, PWD app and DCS (1950) (a call centre available from 9 to 9).
