Drive against drunk driving intensified after Jalukbari accident

Forensic specialists visit accident spot

GUWAHATI: After the fatal accident on Monday in which seven students of the Assam Engineering College (AEC), Jalukbari were killed and six others sustained injuries, police and district administration have intensified the drive against drunk driving.

Guwahati Police personnel and Transport Department officials conducted checking in various locations of the city on Monday night to ensure safety of people by preventing drunk driving. Anyone found driving in a drunken state will be brought to book.

Seven AEC students were killed and six others injured in a road accident near the DCP West office, Jalukbari in the city in the wee hours of Monday. A speeding Scorpio crossed over the divider and crashed into a Bolero goods carrier. There were 10 students of AEC in the Scorpio and three persons in the DI goods carrier.

While visiting the accident site yesterday, Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh DGP GP Singh had said that enforcement drives, especially against drunken driving, would be intensified. He also urged parents and guardians of students, and proctorial staff of schools and colleges to ensure that students do not indulge in drunken driving. He advised people not to drink and drive.

Meanwhile, a team of forensic specialists from Delhi and Pune on Tuesday inspected the accident spot. According to police, the team is closely investigating and gathering evidence from the two vehicles that were involved in the accident.

Among the three students who were injured, Arpan Bhuyan has been released from hospital while Arnab Chakraborty and Mrinmoy Borah and undergoing treatment.
