GUWAHATI, June 27: A team of food safety officials led by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Pijush Hazarika conducted a drive against unsafe food at Beltola on Wednesday. During the drive, the team examined a number of sweet shops, restaurants, and a mustard oil factory located in and around the area and found the vendors’ apathy on maintaining the desired hygiene.

Allegedly for violating the prescribed standard for maintenance of hygiene, the inspecting team sealed the Prime Bakes – one of the famous eatery located at Megha Plaza. The eatery was apparently ordered to remain closed for the next three days to clean their kitchen. In the mean time, the team also ordered the Kanha Sweets to clean their kitchen. Meanwhile, the Minister highlighted that similar drive has been carried out in other parts of the state too. While conducting the drive at a mustard oil factory at Basistha, Loyan’s and Gokul Sweets at Beltola, the Minister asked the workers to wear hand gloves to maintain hygienic.

Stating that it is not possible for the team to go and check the sweet shops regularly, the Minister said, “The team will randomly conduct drive against unsafe food in various places to keep a check on hygiene.” He added that if anyone is found violating the prescribed guidelines, strict actions will be taken against them. On June 29, a meeting is scheduled to be held in Guwahati which will be attended by all the food safety officers along with the Minister himself.
