GUWAHATI: Durga Puja celebrations in the city, which were marked by devotion and all-pervasive merry-making, came to a poignant end in the second half of Wednesday with immersion of idols – bisarjan - amid beating of drums and chanting of hymns.

Idols of over 500 puja pandals were immersed at six spots (ghats) along the bank of the river Brahmaputra in the city and its outskirts – Kasomari ghat, Pandu ghat, Lachit ghat, Saukuchi, Sonapur and Chandrapur. The administration enforced certain strict rules for the immersion ceremony, such a ban on DJs (disc jockeys) in cavalcades carrying the idols, allowing only four persons from each puja committee to take part in the actual immersion process, etc.

Till the time of filing of this report, 198 idols had been immersed at the Kasomari Ghat.

Trucks, auto vans and even rickshaw carts were pressed into service by various puja organizing committees to carry the images of Goddess Durga to the designated immersion ghats in the city. Many devotees had vermillion (sindoor) smeared on their faces and they accompanied the images to the riverbanks.

Meanwhile, various areas of the city also witnessed the last rush of customers queuing up to buy jalebi, nimki, bhujiya and khurma at temporary roadside outlets that had mushroomed over the last four-five days, but which will disappear from tomorrow.
