GUWAHATI: This Durga Puja, the Assam Public Works Department (PWD) will be gifting the people of the Northeast in general and Guwahati in particular, a two-lane flyover. The Sarabbhati flyover has been completed and it will be inaugurated on September 30 by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

It is also no mean feat that the construction of the flyover has been completed 10 months before the scheduled time of completion.

The Dr Bhubaneswar Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), which is a premier cancer treatment institute of the North-eastern region, is situated near the Sarabbhati flyover. It is expected that after the inauguration of the flyover, traffic movement in the area will become smooth. This will come as a relief to the patients coming to BBCI for treatment.

The foundation stone of the flyover was laid on February 26, 2021, just before the 2021 Assembly elections. The scheduled time for completion of the flyover was 30 months. The flyover, which should have been completed by August, 2023, has been completed in just 20 months. The project cost of the 790-metre long flyover is Rs 149 crore. The construction company is now giving final touches to the artwork on the flyover. In a laudable move, the flyover will have paintings of freedom fighters of Assam like Kanaklata Barua, Tilak Deka, Bhogeswari Phukanani etc., to create awareness among the younger generation. People will also get a glimpse of the Battle of Saraighat where Lachit Borphukan fought valiantly against the Mughals.

Guwahati will host a T20 match between India and South Africa at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on October 2. As the flyover will be inaugurated before that, it is expected that traffic flow to the stadium on that day will be eased.
