GUWAHATI: Prabajan Virodhi Mancha Assam (PVMA) convener Upamanyu Hazarika has slammed Minister Pijush Hazarika for 'going against the law' by 'threatening' a journalist.

Upamanyu Hazarika stated that the ECI (Election Commission of India) should register a Suo Motto case against the Minister for intimidating the scribe.

"Through his communal remark, Pijush Hazarika is out to prove himself as a hardcore BJP leader. However, when he was in the Congress seven years ago, his closeness with certain people portrays a different story," said Upamanyu Hazarika

The PVMA convener stressed that such behaviour of the Minster will not benefit the party but will degrade its status.

"It is time for the public to identify such leaders who engage in such acts after swearing to save the democracy. Only a case against the Minister at the police station by the victim is not enough. The ECI should register a Suo Motto case because he has violated the Code of Conduct by intimidating the journalist who is also a voter," added Upamanyu Hazarika.

Meanwhile, various other organizations have also slammed the Minister for 'threatening' the scribe.

Condemning the incident, the Assam Press Correspondents' Union (APCU) has demanded the Minister to issue an apology publicly. The APCU demanded the Governor, DGP, and ECI to take legal action against Pijush Hazarika at the earliest.

"The audio clip where Minister and BJP candidate from Jagiroad constituency Pijush Hazarika is reportedly heard intimidating a television journalist over phone for airing a news report is highly condemnable and cannot be condoned at any cost. We demand that the safety and security of the journalists concerned should be ensured by the Election Commission and the State government," said the Gauhati Press Club.
