GUWAHATI: The much-awaited electric locomotive-hauled passenger carrying trains to New Jalpaiguri started today. Initially four pairs of trains will run on electric traction. However, more trains will run by electric locomotive in the near future. The first long-distance train up to New Jalpaiguri with electric locomotive is the 12343 Sealdah-New Jalpaiguri Darjeeling Mail which started from Sealdah on January 9, 2020, a press release said. The trains that have been planned to run with electric locomotives as of now are – 12343 Darjeeling Mail Sealdah-New Jalpaiguri from January 9,12344 Darjeeling Mail New Jalpaiguri-Sealdah from January 10, 12041 Shatabdi Express Howrah-New Jalpaiguri from January 10, 12042 Shatabdi Express New Jalpaiguri-Howrah from January 11, 22309 AC Express Howrah-New Jalpaiguri from January 14, 22310 AC Express New Jalpaiguri-Howrah from January 15, 55711 passenger Malda Town-New Jalpaiguri from January 10, and 55712 passenger New Jalpaiguri-Malda Town from January 11, 2020. It may be mentioned here that at present many prestigious and long-distance diesel engine hauled trains from NE region are replaced with electric engine at Katihar and Malda Town stations. Electric passenger trains are also running in Katihar – Kumedpur – Old Malda – Malda Court section, the release added.
