Elephants cause havoc at Rani near Guwahati

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 22: Of late the Rani area in Kamrup district along the Assam–Meghalaya border has been witnessing havoc let loose by wild elephants. Interestingly, herds of elephants generally make appearance in the area when the paddy ripens in the fields. However, as of now when the farmers are busy with the sowing of seelings, several villages are being targeted by herds of wild elephants, letting loose havoc among the villagers. The villages suffering from elephant menace are Puran Sukurberia, Manikpur, Haldia, Moirapur, Paatgaon, Beloguri to name a few. Besides destroying the fields, the elephants are also causing damage to other vegetations close to the residences of the villagers. As per sources, although the villagers have informed the Forest department officials about the elephant menace, no action has been initiated by the department so far.
