GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) had recently conducted an eviction in the vicinity of Cotton University and Nehru Stadium. This incident happened after the students’ union of Cotton University expressed concerns regarding the setting up of the proposed Khao Gally near the hotel premises.

The road between Nehru Park and Cotton University has gradually turned into a hub for street food in the past few years. A large number of people depend on the sizeable number of stalls serving a wide range of food items in that location. And with the sudden eviction, these people now find themselves searching for a new location to set up shop and earn their living.

One vendor who did not want to reveal his identity said, “The food that we sell consists mainly of perishable items, so we suffer massive losses if we have to close businesses even temporarily.” Another vendor mentioned, “Why can’t they first decide the location where we can sell our products, and then we can easily move to the new location and continue without work? But now we are at a loss from all sides and unable to pay our bills.”
