Exams amid COVID-19? Gauhati University students seek HC's intervention

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati University Post Graduate Students' Union (PGSU) has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court to take appropriate steps to address the plight of the students of Assam regarding the examinations. In the memorandum, the students' body stated a few reasons as to why the examinations should not be conducted in the month of September. The union stated that the number of COVID-19 cases has been continuously increasing with each passing day hence it would be really risky for the students to visit the institutions to give their final semester examinations. Mentioning about the online method of doing classes, the PGSU stated that most of the students in Assam have no internet access or the privilege of having a smartphone or laptop, as a result of which many of the students have been bereft of the online classes, which has also led to two students committing suicide. Thus, without proper access to internet facility, the notion to conduct online examinations would impose a huge burden upon the students' fraternity.

The body also pointed out that many students had to leave their essentials like books, notes, laptop etc in their respective hostels after an urgent notification was issued in the month of March to shut all educational institutions. Further, the body suggested the Chief Justice that the final year students must be promoted based on a combination of seminars, assignments and average marks of the previous semesters.
