GUWAHATI: The crime branch of Guwahati Police today arrested 52 of the 191 people it had detained in connection with the cyber fraud case yesterday and the day before. The police let 139 of the detained people go but asked them not to leave Guwahati.
According to police sources, most of the people who the police allowed to go were working in the fake call centres as trainees or doing errands. They had no knowledge as to how the fake call centres resort to forgery.
The sleuths of the crime branch and Guwahati police also carried out raids in several places in Guwahati, taking some of the detenus along with them. The crime branch grilled the three masterminds throughout last night. Another mastermind, Tasdiqur Rahman, the son of a retired IAS officer, is on the run. Speaking to the media today, City Police Commission Diganta Borah said, "We have stopped the raids and concentrated on legal actions against the arrested people. Apart from the 52 arrested people, we have served notices to the 139 people freed, asking them to stay wherever they were and not leave Guwahati. We will call them as and when the necessity of their presence arises for interrogation. The investigation is in a preliminary state, and it will be a long-drawn-out process since many rackets are intertwined with these fake call centres."
