Fashion council urges people to support handloom community

GUWAHATI: Northeast India Fashion and Design Council (FNDC), a registered society of Fashion Designers has expressed their concern how the handloom sector is being hampered last year's by CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) movement and this year's corona pandemic and flood.

The society has appealed to the people of Northeast India to buy handloom products and use them to support the handloom community at large.

The National Handloom Day is celebrated on August 7 of every year ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first National Handloom Day at the University of Madras' Centenary Hall in Chennai, on August 7, 2015.

The FNDC started celebrating National Handloom Day since 2019 and is trying to make the theme "I wear Handloom" popular among its followers.

Council's Founder and President Medha Saikia and Joint Secretary Barsha Phukan told that the Fashion Industry of Northeast India is based on Handloom Community.

They appealed to the weavers of Northeast India not to lose their hearts as the good days are bound to come back and they should utilize this lean period for improvement of their skills and variety of designs.

"National Handloom Day 2020 is to increase awareness about the benefits of handloom to the younger generations. On this National Handloom Day, let support the handloom weavers and encourage everyone to buy the handloom products. More than 50 per cent of India's total weaver population resides in the country's Eastern and North-Eastern region," said Medha Saikia.

"The handloom sector provides 4.33 million people with jobs, and is the second largest source of employment in rural India. Around 95% of the world's hand-woven fabric comes from India," she added.
