Firing in MLA hostel; Congress demands inquiry by Assam assembly committee

GUWAHATI: The APCC has expressed deep concern regarding the incident of firing at the MLA hostel. The incident took place at the hostel where the leaders of the opposition of the Assam Legislative Assembly (ALA), Debabrata Saikia, and Deputy Leader of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Rakibul Hussain have their official residences.

The vice president of the APCC media cell, Bedabrata Borah, mentioned that such an incident happening on the premises of the MLA hostel is a matter of concern and demanded that the speaker of the ALA inquire with the assembly committee. In a statement, he mentioned that this can be thought of as an attempt to threaten the opposition to keep their mouths shut.

He demanded that the inquiry also be made to find out if the firing was committed using a government-licenced firearm or an illegal one, and since it was confirmed that a weapon was fired, the inquiry should also look into the possible reasons for the same. He also demanded that strict action be taken against the perpetrator. It can be noted that BJP MLAs Mrinal Saikia and Rupjyoti Kurmi, as well as AIUDF MLA Rafikul Islam, also stay in the same hostel.

In the statement, Bedabrata Borah also renounced the comment made by AIUDF leader Badaruddin Ajmal instigating violence against journalists and mentioned that it is surprising that the state government does not take proper action against communal leaders like him. Although the Silchar Press Club has demanded the arrest of Badaruddin Ajmal, the government not taking any action against him is proof of the connection between them, as mentioned by Bedabrata Borah
