GUWAHATI: Five persons were arrested on Sunday for demanding money from a contractor by posing to be members of the Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell (CM SVC).

Police sources said that the arrested persons demanded money from the contractor, one Narendra Nath Sinha, and asked him to hand over the money at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre at Ganeshguri today. Sinha lodged a complaint with the CM SVC yesterday and a trap was laid to nab the culprits. Accordingly, the five extortionists were caught red-handed when they came to collect the money. They were handed over to the Dispur police.

The culprits have been identified as Pratyush Phukan (23) of Dibrugarh (presently a resident of Bormotoria here), Suresh Saikia (48) of Dibrugarh (presently a resident of Ganeshguri here), Kishore Baruah (27) of Gohpur, Hiranya Hazarika (24) of Biswanath Chariali and Prince Bora (22) of Demow in the Sivasagar district.
