Flood-Free Jorabat Still a Distant Dream

Flood-Free Jorabat Still a Distant Dream

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 11: Even the recent eviction drive conducted by the Kamrup metro district administration at Jorabat area, a smart shower on Tuesday was all it took to trigger flash floods near the flyover at the Jorabat trijunction, with vehicles stranded in the deluge and stuck in snarls.

Notably, the Kamrup metro district administration had conducted the recent eviction drive at Jorabat to clear a rivulet along the NH-37 up to Byrnihat on the Assam-Meghalaya border in which it dismantled nearly 220 structures.

However, the residents of Jorabat as well as the commoners are have still been haunted by flash flood. The root cause behind the artificial flood recurring at Jorabat has been considered due to unscientific construction.

It must be mentioned here that the area near the flyover that witnesses recurring artificial floods and water logging after ever shower is low lying and given the clogged drain, there is hardly any way for the water to take its natural course.

On Tuesday too, numbers of vehicles and commuters were stranded on either side of the water logging points. The Jorabat trijunction connects Guwahati, the gateway to the Northeast, to Meghalaya and Mizoram on one side, and to Upper Assam on the other.
