Food Safety Units of The Health and Family Welfare Department Drive Before Magh Bihu

GUWAHATI: Food Safety Unit of the Health and Family Welfare Department has been performing a drive to oversee hygiene conditions and other issues of contamination and safety norms.

Fish samples were collected from the Fish Market in Bhetkuchi on Friday morning. The fishes in these markets which arrive from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, are notorious for using the chemical formalin. Under a previous investigation, the chemical was discovered being used abundantly on fishes under which a case is already ongoing.

Food Safety Unit Officers said’ “We collected samples of fishes and had them sent to the laboratory to examine traces of chemical products. If the test returns positive for use of formaldehyde, swift action will be taken.” 12 samples of milk were collected on Thursday evening at Khanapara out of which 4 samples of milk appeared suspicious under investigation. These samples have also been sent to the laboratory. The investigations by Food Safety Unit will continue during Magh Bihu as they supervise the safe consumption of food by the public of Assam.
