Foreign-origin cigarettes worth Rs 53 lakh seized in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Acting on specific input, officers of the Anti-Smuggling Unit, Guwahati Customs Division carried out a search operation at the premises of DP World Logistics at Paschim Boragaon in Guwahati on Monday and found 14 gunny bags/packets having cigarettes of foreign origin.

There were no valid documents for the consignment, indicating that the consignment had been smuggled. Out of 14 packets, 13 packets contained two cartons of the ‘WIN’ brand foreign-origin cigarettes – manufactured by Hongyunghonghe Tobacco (Group) Co. Ltd.– in original packeting while the 14th packet contained one original carton of the same brand i.e ‘WIN’.

The Guwahati Customs Division seized all the cigarette packets and a seizure case (Case No. 07/UCL/IMP/AS/GAU/2023-24) was registered. The value of the seized cigarettes is Rs 53,60,000. Notably, the Guwahati Customs Division seized smuggled items worth Rs 2 crore in July, 2023.
