Former CM Tarun Gogoi Seeks Report Card On Border Fencing

GUWAHATI: Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has sought a report card from the BJP-led government at Dispur as to what fencing works it has done so far along the India-Bangladesh border in the Assam sector.

Tarun Gogoi asked the government during the discussion on the Governor’s speech in the Assembly on Wednesday: “Want about border fencing? What length of border fencing works has been done under the present government? And what was done under my tenure? Statistics will say under whose tenure more works were done. Statistics will also say under whose tenure floodlights were installed along the Bangladesh border.”

Recalling a past Governor’s speech, Tarun Gogoi said: “In 2016 after the BJP coming to power in the State the Governor’s speech mentioned the implementation of the Assam Accord in letter and spirit. Why’s this year’s Governor’s speech silent on that? The ground reality is that the Centre wants to violate the Assam Accord by passing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. I’m saying now that the Centre can’t implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. If they can, I’ll honour them with gamosa.” Tarun Gogoi dared the government to disclose the number of applications for Indian citizenship it has received so far. “I ruled the State for 15 years, and got no such application,” he said. On the release of funds for Assam by the Centre, Gogoi said: “I don’t think the Centre has released enough development funds for Assam. During my tenure, the Narendra Modi-led NDA government sanctioned Rs 18,000 crore but released only Rs 12,000 crore. I doubt the Centre will release all that it has sanctioned for Assam this time as well.”
