GUWAHATI: Dispur has devised a plan to make tea estate workers give up the habit of taking salty tea by inculcating the habit of taking tea with sugar. It was indeed a pre-Lok Sabha poll promise of the BJP in the State. And now the BJP-led government in the State is giving the final shape to the poll promise, in the form of a scheme. According to the plan and the pre-poll promise, each and every family of tea estates will get 2 kg sugar free of cost per month. The scheme is to be implemented through the Food and Civil Supplies department. Now the department is preparing necessary guidelines for the implementation of the scheme. The department will invite tender for procurement of sugar only after the guidelines under preparation are approved by the State Cabinet. According to sources, the scheme is likely to be implemented from October this year. Tea estate labourers have been accustomed to taking salty tea instead of sugar tea, maybe, from the British days. However, salty tea has an adverse impact on pregnant women in the community.
