GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has sought a response within three weeks from the Government of Assam in connection with the latter's failure to establish a Transgender Welfare Board and a Transgender Cell in the State in accordance with the laws of the land.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Soumitra Saikia issued a Notice to this effect on Friday while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the All Assam Transgender Association.
The petitioners' advocate Swati B Baruah told The Sentinel on Sunday that establishment of a Transgender Welfare Board and Transgender Cell is imperative under provisions of the Assam Government's transgender policy as well as Parliament's Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019.
