HC asks Dispur, Delhi to file affidavit

GUWAHATI: After the preliminary hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by noted advocate and writer Arup Borbora on Wednesday, the Gauhati High Court has sent a notice to the Centre and the State Government to file an affidavit spelling out the correct nomenclature of the capital city of Assam – Gauhati or Guwahati – within ten weeks. The notice has also been served to Gauhati University, Gauhati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and to the Registrar General of the Gauhati High Court.

Advocate Borbora filed the PIL in the High Court seeking to clear the perplexity regarding the spelling of the name that has been part of daily usage – Gauhati or Guwahati.

Three prominent public institutions – Gauhati University, the Gauhati High Court and the signboard of the Gauhati Municipal Corporation – have been using the spelling ‘Gauhati’, instead of ‘Guwahati’, continuing the legacy of the British administration.

Advocate Borbora appeared in the hearing as the petitioner in person.
