GUWAHATI: The Eco Club of Gauhati University sent a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for conservation of Dehing Patkai and action against illegal coal mining in the region, on Thursday.

The Eco Club stated that the recent decision of the National Board of Wildlife (NBWL) to permit Coal India Ltd. to carry out mining activities at the Saleki region of Dehing Patkai Rainforest would destroy its rich bio diversity and change the ecological balance.

"This region is an Asiatic Bio Diversity hotspot and home to many endangered flora and fauna. The area has been exploited for a long time and has already faced a lot of destruction," stated the Eco Club.

The club demanded the establishment of a special enquiry committee to investigate the illegal coal mining activities in the area. Further, it urged the PM to stop all legal and illegal mining activities in the area. "The government and the nature conservation bodies should take appropriate actions to make up for the lost bio-diversity due to mining and other activities," added the Eco Club in the memorandum.
