Gauhati University Observes International Women’s Day

GUWAHATI: Gauhati University, Department of Women Studies celebrated the International Women’s Day on Friday where the chief guest of the programme was Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, Governor of Assam.

Speaking the occasion Prof. Mukhi said, “We need to take responsibility for making our society more embracive, inclusive and sensible where women get fair share in the socio-economic, political and cultural development narratives of the state. Women folk constitute a substantial chunk of our entire human resources and without the empowerment of women our society cannot progress”.

He also stated that the empowerment in the right sense of the term means providing adequate opportunities to every woman folk to help them achieve their aspirations. An empowered India should provide opportunities to every woman to achieve her potential through education, healthcare, nutrition and employment.

“I pay my reverence to those women achievers around the world who have overcome all impediments and pushed the frontiers of women leadership and have paved the path for other women to follow in their footsteps and become future leaders. Moreover, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Working Women Hostels, Kanaklata Mahila Sabalikaran Achoni, Nari Shakti Puraskars are some of the programmes launched by the Government to tap the indomitable strength of the women folk and make them an active partner of the development narratives of the society,” said Prof Mukhi. The Governor also conferred awards on Women Achievers of Gauhati University.
